About
Place in Mind is a Historic Hospitality Flag rooted in Place and conjured in Mind. We partner with owners of iconic and historic American hospitality properties, unlocking their latent potential through a rigorous and holistic studio-based approach, one informed by the physical record of human experience, craftsmanship, artisanship, and a narrative connection with other historic properties.
Across the American landscape, there are thousands of architecturally significant hotels, inns, and historic buildings designed by visionary architects, constructed by skilled craftspeople, and brought to life by hospitable proprietors. Deeply woven into the fabric of American life, they are irreplaceable symbols of our culture, history, and identity. Yet they are vanishing fast.

Place in Mind is an idea born to resurrect and preserve this identity, not just helping these buildings survive, but allowing them to thrive, and doing so through the modern lens of hospitality.

These historic properties and the experiences they offer are irreplaceable. Our role is to fully realize that intrinsic potential, translating it for the owner into a market leader, and for the guest into the best place you've ever stayed.

Place in Mind was conceived by Rafe Churchill, Principal and Creative Director of critically acclaimed architecture and interior design firm Hendricks Churchill, and Casey Sunderland, its Managing Director and former Film Agent, combining deep expertise in historic buildings and craft with a storyteller's instinct for narrative.

We want to hear from historic hotel and inn owners who have something extraordinary but aren't sure how to tell its next chapter, and from guests who are hungry for the kind of rooted, nostalgic experience that only these places can offer.
